BUILDING DREAMS
IN AN INFORMATION AGE...
Building Dreams is a phrase we don't use lightly at the Assistive Technology Center at the Foundation for Blind Children. We build dreams by developing job opportunities for blind and visually impaired adults in Arizona through our Employment Services. The center has been established to assist blind people in Arizona who are ready, willing and able to be integrated in the Arizona job market; providing them opportunity and access to all of the programs that every other working person in Arizona is offered. We invite you to be a partner in our job placement program to help let the dreams of a few be the reward for a great many in our community.
HOW CAN YOUR COMPANY BENEFIT?
There are many benefits to companies who participate in the Employment Services at the Assistive Technology Center. Some of the benefits that come with this partnership include a full-time staff member dedicated to helping businesses get started. We also provide technical support to ensure the success of your organization and the person you have hired. When you choose to participate in the program, this is a true partnership in every sense of the word. Certain tax incentives may also benefit your company... ask for information about this program.
OTHER BENEFITS:
- There is NO EMPLOYMENT FEE involved. We take care of pre-screening, testing and assessment of the individual at no cost to you, the employer.
- There is NO fee for training of employees. We make sure they are ready and able to join your place of business as a "qualified" team member of your organization.
- We do POST-PLACEMENT follow-ups. You are not left alone once you place one of our people. We make sure we are with you every step of the way. We provide Employer Education on how to work with a blind or disabled person. Our qualified staff will leave no stone unturned in determining the needs or equipment it will take to make our client's transition into your place of business a smooth one for everyone involved!
We invite you to be a partner in our job placement program to help let the dreams of a few be the reward for a great many in our community.
What Do Employers Have To Say?
“Where I was not a believer before … it was due to ignorance not knowing the type of equipment or technology that can be used to do our type of jobs here. The true understanding of technology, and helping that technology fit our systems and software, really is the expertise of the Employment Services Program. So my recommendation is, once a company does understand and educate themselves that there are jobs the visually impaired can do in their companies, to contact ESP and they will give them all of the help they will need.” Bill Madora, Vice President - Discover Business Services

EMPLOYMENT SERVICES TESTIMONIALS
I would like to commend Darcy Hostetler on the wonderful job she has done
preparing me for my interview with Sears, and providing assistance to me
once I had been hired.
Before my interview with Sears, Darcy and I held a mock interview at the
Foundation for Blind Children. We discussed body language, tone of voice,
appropriate attire and even shaking hands. She asked me many in-depth
questions about my education and career goals. Having answered these
questions in a risk-free environment beforehand, I was much more at ease
during the actual interview.
Once I had been hired, Darcy procured a 21" monitor and screen
magnification software for me. During my training, she looked in on me
several times to see if I needed any further accommodations.
Darcy did a wonderful job in helping me find a wonderful job. She was
informative, friendly, encouraging and professional, and I truly appreciate
her work.
Sincerely,
Brooke
Dear Mark,
I just wanted to tell you about the wonderful job that Darcy Hostetler has been doing for me. Darcy helped me find a job; the first job that I have been excited about in a long time. I really appreciate that she would take the time and come out to the job site and help as often as she does.
I was starting to have doubts about my future regarding employment until I started working with Darcy in E.S.P. She really stuck it out. For these reasons, I have a whole new outlook. I would be happy to recommend the program to anyone I know.
Sincerely,
Suzanne
Dear Chris,
I am writing to thank you and your staff for helping me find not one but two successful employment opportunities during the last year. In October of 1999, I was offered a job with Arizona Industries for the Blind as an assistive computer technology instructor. I accepted the offer and began working on December 6, 1999. On January 12, 2000, the City Clerk Department of the City of Phoenix offered me employment as a "Braille document processor". By this time, I had begun teaching several students and was enjoying the work, but the "city job" offered several advantages including shorter commute, higher pay, and new challenges. I left Arizona Industries for the Blind on February 3, and began work with the city of Phoenix on February 7th. As I conclude my third week with the city of Phoenix, I miss my former students and colleagues but look forward to the challenges the new position offers.
I will try not to be too "flowery" but want to recognize the tremendous role the Foundation's Technology Center, and the E S P program played in my search for employment. search for not just any employment, but the best employment. The willingness of the E S P and Technology Center staff to "go the extra mile" speaks to the programs commitment to the success of a client rather than merely meeting quotas. The practical help and emotional support Darcy Hostetler provided throughout the job search were invaluable. The training and instruction from Brenda Newell helped build confidence and hope. The flexible nature of the program itself along with Mark Franklin's willingness to constantly reschedule allowed me to get the help I needed (jobsite orientation, transportation, computer training) in a timely manner without having to wait through a lot of sluggish bureaucracy. I appreciate Deeanna Mumfrey's ongoing efforts to keep the equipment functioning so the training sessions could be meaningful and productive; know her work is sometimes not recognized and I can say from personal experience that it is "work". Mark Nelson (whose work is also behind the scenes) helped in countless ways; helping keep "the big picture" in front of me and offering encouragement. The encouragement all these individuals provided is so important when you feel as though you have a hole in the bottom of your emotional barrel and the hope you are always grasping leaks through it. Sounds dramatic, but it is true.
I also want to thank you for your advice and coaching through the interview process, I really appreciate it. I also realize you must do a ton of work to keep programs of this high quality afloat. Please pass along my thanks to the rest of the staff and do all you can to encourage them. If there is anything I can do to help in any way, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Stan
